“you shall meditate on it day and night.” The first command posed a problem for some past interpreters; Calvin in particular wondered why God referred here to the mouth and not the eye, if the concern was for reading the text. He proposed that the mention of Joshua’s mouth meant Joshua was charged with teaching the Mosaic law to the people (Joshua, p. 33). At the end of the book Joshua does inculcate the commands of Moses to Israel (Josh. 23:6–13); nevertheless, this is not the intention of the mouth
